ABOUT DR. BRANDON MINES
Whether it’s a child who plays for the local soccer team, the weekend runner, or an NFL linebacker, with every type of athlete I see, I’m passionate about advancing the treatment, management and prevention of sports-related injuries and concussions. This is the focus of my clinical practice, along with ultrasound Imaging, at the Emory Sports Medicine Complex.
As a board-certified family and sports medicine physician, my experience in the professional athletic realm has covered many sports. I’m the former Head Team Medical Physician for the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons (as well as serving as their primary sports medicine and concussion specialist), Head Team Medical Physician for the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream, Co-Heat Team Physician for Overtime Elite (OTE) and an Associate Team Physician for the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks. I previously served as a rotational physician for US Soccer, and work with collegiate athletes as Medical Director for the athletic department at Clark Atlanta University.
I’m a frequent lecturer on the topics of treating sports-related injuries, particularly concussion diagnosis and management, as well as taking a very active role in its research and education.
However, I also like to work with athletes long before they reach the heights of professional sports. As a member of the 100 Black Men of America, I mentor teens in some of our most underserved local communities, and volunteer as a supervising physician for various local high school and soccer clubs here in Atlanta.

Q: Outline a typical day/week for you?
As a sports medicine physician, my “9-5” job is working in clinic and seeing patients for various orthopedic injuries. These injuries could run the gamut from a snow skiing knee injury to hamstring strain from kickball, or a youth baseball pitcher with elbow pain. I develop a plan for recovery while setting their expectations. In between seeing patients, I answer emails and text messages from local high school athletic trainers who are seeking help with the athletes they have, as well as administrative items associated with any one of the committees I am affiliated with. Outside of the office, I provide sports medicine coverage for the Atlanta Dream, Atlanta Hawks, and Overtime Elite. These games can be played during weekday evenings or weekends. As a part of that coverage, I am on the sideline and in locker rooms with the athletes and trainers, addressing any injuries/issues that arise.

Q: What motivates you?
I am a fighter for the "little guy,” a figurative megaphone for those who should be heard but often times are not. I decided to become both a family medicine physician and sports medicine physician because I wanted to be able to have all the tools I could to be an advocate for my patients. As a child, I saw how hard my father worked to become a family physician himself. He had to work long hours and make house calls to those who really needed it. I truly am my father’s son (and my Father’s son). So many of our youth and under-represented minority community members have been pushed to the margins of society. Whether it be because they are too small to play the sport they love, too quiet to advocate for themselves or simply not have access/means to participate in the sports they love. I relish the challenge to team up with my patients and fight and gain access to sports/participation that really matters to them.

Q: Who has been my greatest inspiration?
I do not tell him this enough, but my father, Dr. Arthur Mines, is my greatest inspiration. As a black man growing up in the 1950s and 1960s, he witnessed and experienced countless episodes of overt racism and discrimination. Despite that, he successfully matriculated through medical school and started his own private practice. He has a quiet confidence about him, and never complains. I learned that complaining does not help, rather finding solutions is what is important. I have learned that life is not fair (but it is worth it) and turning adversity into triumph should be the goal. Perseverance, discipline, and dedication to the task at hand is the fuel that keeps me going. I learned all these things from my father; not to mention watching how he navigated trials and tribulations in life and seeing that you must never give up. Just keep going. It took until I was late in my 40’s before I realized what watching him did for me. I pray that I can instill the same things in my three sons.
Certainly, my favorite book is the Holy Bible. As one of my best friends reminds me, it is THE manual for how to live (“Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth”). I find inspiration and confidence each morning when I read it. I believe it is important that we have a compass to guide us, and recognize that although we stumble, we still need to get back up and put our feet on the path. Whenever I want to be discouraged at the world, the Bible reminds me that there are beautiful things in this world to fight for. Talk about motivation!

Q: Favorite entrepreneur that inspires you and why?
My brother-in-God Dr. Güez Salinas, Chief Strategy Officer of Quantum Generative Materials & Executive Director of LEWIS, has been equal parts mentor and family member for me. Philanthropy and activism have always been cornerstones in the best expression of myself, but he demonstrated to me the importance of always making our thoughts match our words and then translating those words into actions. He brought clarity to the notion that on a long-enough timeline, all of our actions should be Divinely inspired. He helped me better understand that we are all blessed in order to be a blessing for others, and that our lives are better when we lift others as we rise. The work we do together at LEWIS (in conjunction with 100 Black Men of Dekalb in the Atlanta area) has been cathartic soul food.

Q: What is your favorite part about being a visionary?
I love the idea that I can start something that can be continued in the future by like-minded individuals. Being a visionary means thinking about ways to make the impossible possible. Dr. Salinas told me “the only difference between ‘impossible’ and ‘I’m possible’ is looking up and stepping out.” I never accept the word “can’t” and rather focus on “how.” It is very stimulating mentally to operate that way, and I find that it keeps me sharp as I look for novel solutions for everyday problems. I tell the students with whom I work to first imagine a mundane room with muted, dull colors all over. Then, imagine a bright colored flower vase in the middle of the table with a bouquet of gorgeous spring flowers. The vase and flowers break up the mundane and all anyone will say upon entering the room is, “look at those flowers, what a great idea for this room!.” That is why being a visionary is so fun. You can show people things they did not think were possible or realistic.

Q: How do you build a successful clientele?
Listen to people! Most people hear, but not everyone listens. One of my mantras is “talk less, listen more.” People who come to me looking for help or needing me to help solve a problem want to know that I fully understand what they conveyed to me. This is the empathy that I seek from others, so I freely give it to those who have sought me out. It is only then that they can sincerely feel that what matters to them also matters to me. That is the sweet spot of effective communication where I can really have their ear and explain the solution in a way that resonates with them. If you can do that, you have an ally for life, someone who views you as “fixer” and “solution-finder.”
Q: What key activities would you recommend entrepreneurs invest their time in?
I think it is so important to really understand what motivates people, and then focus on positive-sum solutions to contribute to those motivations. Too many companies and entrepreneurs focus on the product and not the people who must live with the product or service. When you boil it down, the most important thing is relationships (and the people in those relationships). So, invest time in getting to know people. Learn something about them that gives you a feel for what really makes them tick. Show genuine interest in what is important to them, and they will respond in kind. We do not trust someone we don’t know. So, learning how to build that trust is paramount to success.

Q: If you could do something over in the past, what would it be and why?
While we should not beat ourselves up over lost opportunities, I do think it helps to think about how we could have done things better. I know it helps me when I am teaching a junior learner or activist. Essentially, I am an introvert by nature. Initially, I found it hard to really network and make connections over my early years. However, I am better at it now, especially in my position as the Deputy Director for Community Engagement at LEWIS. Just like anything else, trying to be something different than what you are at your core can be very difficult. I would go back and tell my younger self to try harder to reach out and make connections to like-minded individuals. I would have been better about fostering and nurturing relationships outside of my comfort zone. I am amazed by the great group of people in my network now.

Q: How do you prevent burnout?
Burnout is a very real issue in medicine, just like any other profession. While I must admit that I am very busy with all of my daily medical and administrative duties, I have some tools that keep me going. Humor is very important. It is amazing what a laugh or smile can do for yourself, your colleagues, or the patient/client to whom you are speaking. I also find that being a lifelong learner makes my job never feel like work, per se. I value the knowledge and skillsets of my fellow colleagues and team-members. I find that trusting in others and their ability to share some of the patient responsibilities allows me to intently focus on the task in front of me at any given time. Finally, I keep close tabs on my mental well-being. One of the hardest things to learn is to say “No” when someone asks you to do something extemporaneous that would be a burden. This is especially true in the early/mid-stage of my career. I carefully pick and choose when to say “yes” to something, but I do my best to explain my “no’s” and give that individual some direction and guidance.

Q: Places that you enjoyed visiting locally/nationally/globally, and why?
Spending time at Yosemite National Park was quite an experience for me. Just marveling in the natural wonder and beauty of the park was an amazing experience. Whenever I think about it, I am reminded of how important it is for all of us to protect our natural resources. In line with that inspirational trip, visiting the slave auction sites in Savannah, GA definitely has shaped my mindset of America. Visiting that area, imagining what it must have been like for those enslaved humans who had just survived the Trans-Atlantic journey is a heavy thought. As much as it saddens me to think about the atrocities that occurred there, I am optimistic about where we are and where we can go as a nation. There has been a lot of progress over the centuries, but we cannot rest on our laurels and think everything is OK. There is still a lot to do when it comes to addressing those atrocities, and we have to remember that learning our history is the best way to protect our future. Overall, I find inspiration to do all I can as an American to improve the lives for all of us. This just one of the many reasons why I enjoy my work at LEWIS.

Q: What do you do to relax and for self-care?
I definitely like to disconnect from work and find peace in other things that bring me joy. I love spending time playing with my three sons. Just watching them discover things for the first time brings me joy and allows me to appreciate the little things in life that we tend to take for granted. I really like the outdoors, so spending time gardening or doing some yard work is quite peaceful for me. My favorite hobby that really works my creative juices and is relaxing at the same time is homebrewing. I got “bit” by the homebrewing bug in 2007 and have not looked back since. Some may say it was in my blood, being a kid from Milwaukee!
Q: How has being a sports doctor affected your family life?
I have been blessed to have a spouse that understands the demands of a sports medicine doctor. Communication is key, so we talk about what obligations (games, practices) are coming up and get them on the calendar. My children are young, but they already understand that “daddy sometimes must go on an airplane and work at a game.” They look for me on TV, and sometimes find me on the sideline! I think it is positive for them since they can see how hard I work, and that I am taking care of people that need my help.

Q: Where were you born and raised?
I was born in Chicago, IL, and raised in Milwaukee, WI. After all the years in the cold, I decided living in the south was the way to go. I went to Morehouse College and fell in love with Atlanta. After my medical training was completed, I was fortunate enough to make Atlanta my home in 2005.
Q: What was your first job ever? What was the takeaway from that role?
My first job was as a newspaper assembler. My job was to take different sections of the Sunday newspaper and add them together into one whole newspaper. Imagine, this was all done by hand! I was 14 years old and the best part of the job was that the money I made was based on how many newspapers I could put together. The faster I was, the better. The catch was that each paper had to be put together well since you had to stack them all on the floor in such a way that it was kind of like a house of cards. If the papers were put together messy, you ran the risk of the whole stack tumbling down. One of the best aspects of the job was that I had the freedom to come to work when I wanted to, as long as I was able to complete my allotted number of newspapers by the end of the day. I learned to go very fast, and because of that, I was making well over minimum wage. Experiencing productivity based work allowed me to really see how important it was to be rewarded for the level of work I put into a job. I also got to feel the independence of being my own boss as it related to managing my time. Overall, the big picture was that if I worked hard, managed my time well and adhered to making sure I put together a quality product, there was no way I could lose. In reality, those experiences really shaped how I approach my work to this day.
