“I am working with highly intelligent, caring individuals who are dedicated to making a difference in the world. Working together, we produce amazing results.”
Give us an overview of your role at Kaiser Permanente? In my role as Learning and Organization Development Consultant, I provide leadership and communication coaching to our clinician leaders. I partner with Kaiser Permanente leaders at all levels to enhance our organization’s performance by assessing organizational capability, implementing strategies to build a culture of development and by improving the engagement, resilience and capacity of our leaders, teams and individuals. Working with my colleagues, I anticipate emerging organizational needs, provide expert advice and feedback to organizational leaders and identify or develop resources to close performance gaps. I also provide consultation through the analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation of leadership, team and employee development programs.
What is a typical day for you at Kaiser Permanente? A typical day starts with a 1-hour meeting with my learning and organization development team to discuss our current projects, client requests, upcoming projects, challenges, etc. I then head to one of our physician leader’s offices, where I coach her 1 on 1 on a project or development area of her choice. I then head to our company’s Innovation Committee meeting, where a small group of us discuss wins in innovation we are currently experiencing as well as ways to increase innovation in our organization. I then answer emails and work on projects. I typically have at least 1 more coaching session with a leader in the afternoon. On a different day, I may spend the full 8 hours teaching a leadership development course to a group of our leaders.

With the demands from your professional realm & home life, how do you find that critical balance to ensure that you have Me Time to refresh and reset to keep yourself at optimized state? I meet with a Life and Leadership Coach for 1-hour a week, 4 times a month, year-round. With the help of my Coach, I am handling my life and work priorities in a meaningful way. I treat my self-care needs in the same way that I treat a project at work; I create a project plan with outcomes, measures, milestones, rewards, etc. I also schedule my self-care needs on my calendar. I eat a whole-food, plant-based diet 90% of the time. I also work out with a trainer and complete a yoga class 3 days a week.
You have been at Kaiser Permanente for quite some time now, what do you attribute to the longevity and commitment of staying loyal and committed to one company? I am passionate about Kaiser Permanente’s mission of improving the health of our members and communities we serve. Prior to working for KP, I worked with populations that did not have access to affordable healthcare and witnessed the devastating consequences that resulted. I am proud of working for a company that is working tirelessly to make high quality healthcare affordable to all.

In your professional journey, what was the most compelling challenge you've experienced that made you more pliable for growth and what resolved did you find to offer and implemented? While in college, I majored in politics and completed 2 political internships. Five months after graduating, I was hired as a staff member of a U.S. Congressman in Washington, D.C. I had landed the job of my dreams. Within months, I realized that I didn’t like politics. At the time, I thought I would never have a job or career that I enjoyed. A year and a half later, I was hired to work with urban youth doing training and development. I feel in love with my career as an educator and coach. In addition to my current job at KP, I’ve opened a coaching practice on the side to help others find their dream careers. Because of my experience on Capitol Hill, I never take for granted having a job and career that I love.
Your skillset as a seasoned Professional Coach is impeccable and prized by your team at your company. If I were to ask your team members and superior the 3 qualities, they value about you, what would they be? When I learned you would be asking me this question, I surveyed my colleagues and superior, because that is what Learning and OD Consultants do. 😊 My top three qualities are: my passion, my compassion, and my authenticity.

What do you most enjoy about your company & your current role? In addition to being passionate about the mission of KP, I am working with highly intelligent, caring individuals who are dedicated to making a difference in the world. Working together, we produce amazing results.
What project(s) are you working on now? We just graduated 16 new leaders from a leadership development program, I helped to design and deliver. I am currently tweaking the program for our next group of new leaders. I am also providing 1:1 coaching to various leaders in our organization. Thirdly, I am working with my colleagues to create a video highlighting an employee recognition program that I helped to develop and implement that recently won a national KP award for the impact it had on our employees’ wellness and engagement.

Who were your mentors that made a significant influence that redirected your journey? While in college, a professor thought I would make a great coach in our writing center. She hired me and enrolled me in a 2-year training program. That began my coaching career. Later in my career, two of my managers, Michele Foriska, at Georgia-Pacific, and Julia Skeen, at the Southeast Permanente Medical Group, both took risks on me and developed me into the coach and leader I am today.

What is the secret formula to your success? Not only do I focus on what I am doing, but I also focus on who I am being. So often in our society, we think that doing more will get us what we want. We forget that we are human beings and not human doings. Often, we need a longer “to be” list rather than a longer “to do” list. When I am making a decision, I ask myself, “Am I coming from my survival mechanisms (fear, perfectionism, etc.) or from my essence/best self (joy, power, unity, play and heart). When I come from my best self, things go so much better for everyone involved. I’ve opened my own coaching practice on the side, and I work with my clients to identify their essence or best self. While coaching them in the foreground on their projects and development areas, I am always encouraging them in the background to come from their essence 90% of the time.

The programs provide transformative care through therapeutic services, education, life skills, and personal and professional development. The focus for each participant is on developing their courage to move forward and their confidence to succeed.
