Q: What are your current goals?
My current goals are to: 1) Pass the Uniform Investment Adviser Law Exam (Series 65) and 2) have a Super Soul Conversation with Oprah Winfrey and Brene Brown on how my purpose driven life chose me as the vessel to change the narrative of life insurance from a death benefit to a wealth benefit.

Q: How do you continue to grow and develop as a leader?
I continue to grow and develop as a leader through my personal board of directors. Extremely brilliant and successful business owners, executives and leaders surround me. My parents have also set the example for me throughout life. A dear friend and executive once told me, “Ebony it’s important that you maintain 5 people in your network: 1) Executive Coach, 2) Pacesetter 3) Sponsor – someone who heavily influences decision makers and will put their name and reputation on the line for you, 4) Mentor and 5) Friend – emotional support who informs you of your blind spots, is honest with you, not jealous and most importantly genuine and authentic.

Q: How do you generate great ideas in your organization?
I generate great ideas in my organization by: 1) listening to my clients by way of organic feedback, testimonials and surveys, 2) applying what I learn through continuing education to fill the gaps in knowledge of my niche market, and 3) listening to mentors who have accomplished where I see the future of Ruffin Consulting Services.

Q: What three books can you recommend on leadership and why?
The first book I recommend on leadership is “Good too Great” by Jim Collins. I was assigned to read this book by Dr. Waters at Auburn University as part of an independent study course. If you read “Good too Great” one time, your perception of leadership and business success will FOREVER be impacted by two very important concepts. The first concept is Level 5 Leadership. A Level 5 Leader encompasses: humility, asks for help, takes responsibility, has self discipline, finds the right people and leads with passion. The second concept is the Hedgehog Concept. After reading about the Hedgehog Concept, I realized this was taught to me in childhood and reinforced throughout life in my home. The Hedgehog Concept says organizations will succeed once they identify the one thing they do best and focus on being the very best at that one thing. The Hedgehog Concept can be applied to an individual or corporation. It’s all encompassing of three intertwined components: 1) identify your deepest passion, 2) what will your passion make you the best at, and 3) what drives the economic engine behind your passion.
The second book is “The 48 Laws of Power” by Robert Greene. In one simple statement, this book is essential because life is not checkers; it’s chess.
The third book is “Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren. This book is my personal go to book. I read the book every few years to help me focus on my why and purpose in life. This book keeps me grounded and focused on a higher calling. I know for sure when I found that my purpose was not for self-interest, that I had reached my calling. After reading this book, I always experience an awakening and blessings flow abundantly.

Q: How do you make room for continuing to learn while leading?
If you are not making room for continuing learning while leading, you’re making room to become the next Blockbuster. I do not want to be the next Blockbuster. I make room for continuing learning because of a few factors, 1) Continuing education is required to maintain certain licenses, 2) my clients are priority and providing them the best and most up to date information is imperative and 3) I time block to study, read and speak with mentors.

Ruffin Consulting Services is unique because of the woman behind the brand, me, Ebony Ruffin. I have found a unique way to make life insurance planning an attractive topic. Clients are no longer running from life insurance as a death benefit but they are attracted to incorporating life insurance into their financial plan as a wealth benefit. Ruffin Consulting Services focuses on education first. Through our educational resources, clients are more equipped and confident to discuss life insurance. We have a free interactive life insurance course that will take you from confused to confident about life insurance. The course includes short videos paired with info graphics and worksheets to make it easier to learn and retain how to calculate your life insurance needs, where and how to apply for life insurance and why life insurance is an integral component to a financial plan. I am most proud of the edification from our clients and peers. Positive word of mouth has positioned Ruffin Consulting Services for winning collaborations, quality clients and trust. While this is all worth celebrating, it must be noted that consistency, hard work and relationship capital helped grow the business organically.

I find new connections and business prospects to grow my company by leveraging relationships, niche marketing and positioning myself as a thought leader on life insurance planning and financial planning. First, I seek to understand what the market is missing, then I am very intentional and consistent on providing education and informative solutions, and I collaborate on platforms where my niche market trusts the platform and actively engaged in search for my area of subject matter expertise. Once I gain the attention of my niche market I ensure that I did not lose the attention. I have implemented a streamlined system to attract, confirm trust, provide a solution and become a household name synonymous with life insurance planning.

Q: What was your first job ever?
My first job was at a movie theatre in Montgomery, AL. I was so driven to earn my own income that as soon as I turned 15, I interviewed for the job and landed the position. This was more than a job, this was an opportunity for me to earn, learn, and apply what I learned at home about saving, money management, and much more. As a high school student, this was also the coolest place to work to see everyone in your hometown from friends, to students from other schools and family. Besides, this job got me a pass on staying out past curfew. I soon realized cleaning up popcorn, closing the registers, restocking products, cleaning theatre rooms was not my idea of a great time, so I identified a pathway to promotion. Yes, promotion as a high school student working at the movie theatre. I knew that if I did my job exceptionally well, got along with my team members, was respectful to everyone, always arrived on time, picked up shifts for people that called out, that this behavior would land me an opportunity to be promoted to the ticket booth. Yes, the ticket booth was the ideal position. You are the first face guests see, and you have an opportunity to make a first impression before guests enter the building. I greeted guests, smiled, explained the movies when needed, explained pricing and made sure guests felt excited to enter the building. This was my “ah hah” moment of I can literally grow in any opportunity and accomplish my goals. As soon as I turned 16, my dad handed me the keys to the coolest Toyota Supra and from there I was an unstoppable young lady boss. Due to having my own transportation, I was now available to pick up more shifts after school, after majorette practice and on the weekends. The income I earned gave me a sense of independence and a feeling of demonstrating to my parents that I was responsible.

Q: Where are your favorite places to visit in Atlanta and why?
To be asked what are my favorite places to visit in Atlanta makes me chuckle. It’s the question I am asked the most because people admire my Buckhead Ebony (@buckheadebony) experiences. As an Army Brat, I have always been the person to explore where I live, create a things to do and places to go list and be the go to amongst friends and family to provide suggestions on where to live, eat, and play. So are you ready for the Buckhead Ebony experiences in Atlanta? Here is a small glimpse of my Atlanta list. My list is also expanding to include IPIC, Puttshack, and Chattahoochee Food Works.
