What lessons have you learned that shifted your mindset to optimize your leadership? I have had many lessons that shifted my mindset. One being to never judge a book by its cover. I have 78 employees and I’m constantly growing my business, so I’ve learned that it isn’t always what is on someone’s resume that defines them. There are a lot of great people that haven’t been given the opportunity to excel in their career due to being judged on their appearance not on their character. I learned how important it is to meet someone and look them in the eyes before placing any judgement on them. I have gained some incredible employees due to this shift in mindset. The most important lesson I have learned is to be a cheerful giver. There is nothing better than giving back to the community. When your city sees your commitment to giving back, you gain their respect and support. At University Kia, we donate every month to help support organizations.

Q: What was the game changer for you that catapulted the direction of your leadership? I believe before you can become a great leader you must become a great follower, so I learned everything I possibly could about University Kia and started coming up with creative ways to grow the dealership. The game changer that catapulted my leadership role was when I was given the opportunity to star in University Kia’s TV commercials. I quickly became the face of the dealership and from there my brand exploded. Since then, we have shot over 100 commercials and we were just awarded Dealer of the Decade, which was a dream to accomplish.

Q: Do you believe there is some sort of pattern or formula to becoming a successful entrepreneur? Yes, my motto is hard work always pays off. The formula to becoming a successful entrepreneur is having goals and habits. Goals will provide a sense of direction and help you focus. Having effective habits give you the mental discipline to reach your goals. Another key factor is setting the right attitude – bringing a smile to work every day and always having positive energy.

Q: What motivates you? I am highly motivated by my children. I have three sons and they look up to me immensely. I never want to be seen as a failure, so I work extra hard to be the best role model to them. If you want your children to be successful, then you must show them the pathway to greatness.
Q: What has been your most satisfying moment in business? Being in the auto industry for the last 24 years, I have had countless satisfying moments. The most gratifying moment I’ve had was becoming Managing Partner at University Kia. After being the General Manager for 8 years and then being asked to become a partner was the pinnacle to my career. Owning a car dealership was the culmination of many years of hard work.

Q: What business-related book has inspired you the most? The most inspiring business-related book I’ve read is, “The Greatest Salesperson in the World” by OG Mandino. This book is a must read for those who want to improve their sales skills, but also for all those who want to make great achievements in life. It explains how people build their future with their habits and how being kind to yourself and others is a habit that will open doors for you to get what you want. This book also explains that life will present you with challenges but if you act, persevere, and have faith you will succeed. And lastly, it also talks about how constant personal development combined with always setting ambitious goals will make you a successful person.

Q: What projects are you working that you are most excited about? I recently just started a non-profit organization named S.T.A.R.S. which stands for Students That Are Reaching Success. I created this non-profit to help guide young men on how to become young professionals. We mentor them on everything they will need to know about giving the best first impression needed entering into the business world. For example, how to tie a tie, iron their clothes, the proper etiquette in different social settings, using the correct posture, etc. By teaching these critical details, it will help set them apart from their competition.

Q: Tell me about is your hometown? I was born and raised in the beautiful city of Memphis, TN. It is known worldwide as “Home of the Blues and Birthplace of Rock n’ Roll.” One of my favorite places to visit is Beale Street. It is America’s most iconic street and a National Historic landmark located in downtown Memphis. I am also a huge fan of their NBA team, the Memphis Grizzlies.
Q: What time do you get up and what’s the first thing do you do in the morning? I am a very disciplined person, I’m up at 5AM to start my day. I always begin my morning with prayer, giving thanks to God and I ask Him for guidance throughout my day.
