Q: What is your company service offerings? I opened KD Staffing in 2007 for permanent medical professionals, and we are a contingency staffing firm. We tend to stay specialized and focused on permanent staffing for our hospitals and medical practices. We staff all nursing departments, nursing managers, directors, mid-levels, and/or “hard to fill” positions. I have 22 years in recruitment and the medical industry, and ten years prior in restaurant management. My corporate background in recruitment included running the travel divisions prior to opening KD Staffing in 2007. We offer fair and affordable rates to our clients. In 2018, I opened a second company called “KDC Making a Difference, LLC” which is current day books and public speaking. I am a proud international best-selling author on my second book “Riding the Executive Roller Coaster-Medical Staffing cases.”

Q: Lessons that you have learned that shifted your mindset to optimize how to practice your leadership/business? I am known for “Business, Sales Awards, setting your people for success and making a difference in the communities including service work.” I take a lot of my life philosophies and apply them towards my business model. I have a life program and life coach for 17 years and I take this knowledge and pass it on for years. I believe that if you can set people up for success in the beginning stages that they have a higher chance for success. I often coach my team to “go above and beyond” in their own job roles. Extra ambition, creative thinking and passion will take you extremely far in achieving stronger results. At KD Staffing, we sell services and people in jobs and recruitment. There are many different leadership styles. I often avoid being the “know it all leader” that keeps their mind closed and believe they have all the personal answers. Stronger leaders can learn so much by having the ability to sit down, shut their mouths and listen to other people. There is a wealth of knowledge from listening to other people. I believe that you can achieve greater success with cooperation from others and teamwork.

Q: If you can do over something in the past, what will it be and why? I learned at a later age in life some unbelievably valuable lessons towards building long term relationships in both business and personal. The whole “the grass is not always greener on the other side” comes in play sometimes. I coach a lot of people on “start overs” after an unbelievably difficult day, bad week, or tough times. Do you have the proven abilities to get up in the morning and start over? Do you have it within your heart to forgive others and move on? Overcoming challenges and stability can add a lot of happiness and peace to life. I suppose thinking back both to favorite jobs in my career and broken relationships, then sometimes I wonder what would happen if I had chosen to stay? We are not always proud of broken relationships or jobs that we left. We often think a new path will be better and then we find out that we are still faced with the same challenges. So why not stay and work things out?

Q: What was the game changer for you that catapulted your leadership/business at your company? Throughout my career, then I often achieved a lot of sales awards and I have a training program called “Recruitment is an Art.” This training program is designed for sales and recruitment professionals on the phones. I often talk about quality calls versus quantity calls and there is a substantial difference. My team is educated on collaborating with medical professionals through the entire process of interviewing, onboarding, transitioning, and starting job opportunities. Organized follow up and business relationships is imperative. I am strong in setting up systematic training, recruitment tools, organization for my operations. Training, role playing and proper information on the job helps my team and their success models. About five years ago, I switched our mission statement to reflect a “less is more philosophy.” What does that mean? My team focuses on less clients and larger amount of service towards our clients. We focus on long-term clients and results while gaining more job orders upon proving our level of service. We tend to ask for more information upfront from our clients so that qualified medical professionals have more information upfront. Our clients do not want a sloppy resume handed to them. They want candidates on a scale of “1 to 10” at least an “8” and accepting a job. We prequalify and spend time upfront in the interview processes.

Q: Who are your mentors that impacted your professional/personal journey? I often attribute my operational knowledge to my restaurant bosses of the nineties. My ten years in restaurant management career taught me budgeting, training, coaching, delegating, planning and many areas needed while managing people and business operations. I was a named “trouble shooter and analytical person” at an incredibly early age in management. These business lessons would transfer into sales and recruitment at a later age. Current day, I believe strongly in business coaches, professional development coaches, life coaches, public speaking coaches and using professionals to grow and development your businesses. Obtain strong legal knowledge in the areas you practice business. A strong leader always recognizes that you can always go stronger and better for the future.

Q: What is the most important business lesson you have learned? Nobody is perfect. We all make mistakes, but can you learn from your mistakes and go stronger and smarter in the future? Can you own mistakes, except responsibility and apologize when necessary? I expect progress and not perfection for myself and my team. With operational planning, expect the best and plan for the worst. Never just “shake hands” and trust people in business. All business deals should be in formal writing and use proper legal documents. Have the proper legal knowledge for whatever business you perform. Use attorneys to help your business on the front end and you avoid future disaster.
Q: Entrepreneurs and business owners have the tendency to be workaholics. How do you overcome burn out? I am in the workaholic’s category. Throughout the years, I always STOP myself for “fun moments” or down time with relationships, friends, and family. In short, always remember that “life is short” and take some downtime. Even if it is a few hours, a flexible schedule or off day, take the time.
Q: What do you do for self-care and to relax? I am a big believer in heathy diet and exercise. With a mentally stressful job then exercise decreases stress and helps maintain a more cheerful outlook. Since my first career was hospitality, then if I am not working in a restaurant then I am out dining in restaurant for fun and social time. I love movies, concerts, parties, and social events. People genuinely make this world a happier place.
Q: What was your key driving force to become an entrepreneur? As an entrepreneur, I enjoy wearing many different hats. It is often stated that entrepreneurs might spend double the hours to be their own boss. Self-creating, recreating, and formulating “out of the box” planning is part of the challenge. Strategizing and marketing yourself or business to be different from the competition is part of the package. “How can you beat the competition” is extremely exciting challenge for individuals with a competitive edge. Lastly, when you are an entrepreneur then you look to yourself and your team for success. Never depend on the competition to help your success. It is within yourself whether you WIN, or you LOSE.

Q: What type of networking gatherings make sense for you and vital to the growth of your company? As the CEO of KD Staffing, the medical industry and medical events are priority for networking new clients in the industry. However, I also enjoy learning distinct aspects of medical for general knowledge of updates, trends, and educational purposes. Personal meet ups and direct phone calls establish better business relationships. The medical industry is vast in knowledge and care taking. As a CEO and entrepreneur, I have floated around to many networking, business development and public speaking events. Whether it is a local business mixer, Chamber of Commerce, media event, charity, public speaking or international event in another area and fun travels. I always enjoy meeting people in every aspect of business and industries. Meeting people in various industries finds common grounds. We can all help support each other and educate each other together.
